Xishuangbanna Declaration on Plant Conservation

The Xishuangbanna Declaration on Plant Conservation was released after unanimous approval from the participants in the Xishuangbanna International Symposium, “Saving All the Plants in a Changing World”, held from January 3rd to 5th, 2019, at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in tropical Southwest China, near the borders with Laos and Myanmar. The more than 200 registered participants included 10 directors of botanical gardens, as well as senior representatives from 15 additional gardens, and other people working on plant conservation. The Symposium focused on strategies for achieving zero extinction of plant species and featured plenary talks by Peter Wyse Jackson, President of the Missouri Botanical Garden, Keping Ma, from the Institute of Botany in Beijing, Valerie Pence, Director of Plant Research at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, Sam Brockington, Curator of Cambridge Botanic Garden, Weibang Sun, Director of the Kunming Botanical Garden, Pete Hollingsworth, Deputy Keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Rakan Zahawi, Director of the Lyon Botanical Garden, Chuck Cannon, Director of the Center for Tree Science at the Morton Arboretum, Luxiang Lin and Ruichang Chan, from XTBG, and Paul Smith, Secretary General of BGCI.
